If you're considering a career change to cybersecurity with no experience, give yourself a concrete question to investigate. Learning how one website security problem works is a manageable place to begin. You can explore your interest alongside your current commitments.
Choose a part of cybersecurity to explore
Cybersecurity covers many kinds of work. The NIST NICE Framework describes cybersecurity work and the knowledge and skills it involves. Use it to look beyond a job title and find activities that interest you.
Website security is BugClub's focus. An investigation might ask whether a website checks who is allowed to open a record, or whether its checkout trusts a price sent by the browser. Following those questions means observing behavior, testing an idea in a simulated environment, and explaining the evidence.
Try one small investigation
Start with the business logic guide. Its illustrative shop shows how a checkout can accept a negative quantity. Work through the example, then describe which rule the website failed to enforce.
For more independent practice, PortSwigger Web Security Academy offers free web-security learning materials and interactive labs. Read the instructions for the target you're given and stay within its scope. Our practice guide explains what to check before you begin.
Keep a short record of what you expected, what happened, and what you still need to understand. If you're stuck, look for an explanation of the concept, then return to the example and try to explain it in your own words.
Notice which parts you want to keep doing
Finishing a lab gives you something to reflect on. Did you enjoy figuring out why the website behaved that way? Did explaining the result help you understand it? Would live teaching or feedback make your next attempt more useful?
You don't have to enjoy every part. Your notes can help you choose another topic, find a different learning format, or decide that your curiosity lies elsewhere. The course comparison explains several ways to continue.
What comes after an introductory course?
If you want to pursue an ethical hacking career, choose a role to research and compare its tasks with what you can currently do. Read current job descriptions for the education, experience, and practical skills requested. Use those requirements to plan your next steps.
Keep examples of work you can explain, and notice where your understanding is still thin. A beginner course can help you choose a direction; it is one part of a longer learning plan.
Explore with an instructor
BugClub is an eight-week, live online beginner cybersecurity course focused on website security. Students investigate simulated websites, write bug bounty-style reports explaining their findings, and work through instructor feedback. In some exercises, the instructor plays the company receiving the report and asks follow-up questions.
The adult group meets on Tuesdays, 8:15 to 9:45 PM Eastern. Plan for about 4 hours a week, including the live session in weeks 1 to 7. No coding experience is required to start.
The course offers introductory skills and a way to explore your interest. It doesn't provide a professional qualification, job placement, or a guarantee of bug bounty earnings. If you decide to pursue a particular role, research its requirements and plan further learning around them.
